Golf Tournaments Raise Money for Programs

Golfers in action caption: Joey Brandmeier, Tom Wiese, Frank Vascellaro (putting) and Dave Hopkins golfed for Friendship Ventures at the Circle of Friends Golf Classic in July.

In the past month, Friendship Ventures has benefited from the proceeds of two golf tournaments. On July 18th, the Circle of Friends Golf Classic premiered. This brand new tournament was the work of Friendship Ventures Board member Mark Steen and Bob Harnett, Friendship Foundation board member and long-time friend of Friendship Ventures.

Together they organized the golf tournament, dinner and live and silent auctions. 132 golfers participated in morning and afternoon rounds at Rolling Green Country Club for the Circle of Friends Golf Classic, and 175 guests enjoyed the dinner, program and auctions. The foursome of Peter Glanville, Pete Glanville, Mike Jacobson and Craig Johnson won the tournament with a score of 13 under par.

KARE-11 anchor Frank Vascellaro emceed the evening event after golfing a round himself. We extend our gratitude to him for his contributions to the tournament.

For a first-time event, the Circle of Friends Golf Classic had phenomenal success, netting approximately $84,000 for Friendship Ventures programs.

Friendship Ventures extends thanks to each sponsor and donors of all the 100+ auction items. We especially thank the donors of these featured items:

Mike Sertich, former UMD Bulldog hockey coach, donated John “Buzz” Harrington’s 1980 Olympic hockey stick signed by Herb Brooks and the entire 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team. The stick brought in $5,600 at the live auction.

Mark and Kris Miner donated the use of their new 36-foot sailboat in Bayfield, WI for two days, along with the assistance of a licensed coast guard captain for a private sailing trip.

Harvey and Barbara Ratner donated two courtside tickets to a Minnesota Timberwolves basketball game.

With such a success, event sponsors Steen and Harnett are planning already for next year. Save Monday, July 17 2006 for the 2nd Circle of Friends Golf Classic.

Earlier this month the 19th Jolly Open Golf Tournament was played at Southbrook Golf Club in Annandale, followed by a dinner and silent auction. This tournament was first organized by Barb and Gabbi Harnett, their family and friends. The tournament is named for the Harnetts’ children Joey and Molly, who participate with their brother Neil in Friendship Ventures activities.

Thanks to the 90 golfers and 105 dinner and auction guests, Friendship Ventures will receive nearly $20,000 to be used for financial assistance for families like the Harnetts. Watch for details next spring for the 20th Jolly Open.

To all those who volunteered, golfed, donated auction items or supported these golf tournaments in any way, we thank you!
